Are Things Really Getting Better?

Do those in the Obama Administration really think we as intelligent citizens believe that "things are getting better"? Come on! I've heard it said that the difference between a recession and a depression is "it's a recession if your neighbor is unemployed, and it's a depression if you, yourself, are unemployed." From my observation, it sure seems like we are in a serious depression for alot of folks in our great United States of America, and I don't believe it's going to get better for quite a while.
I wish there was some way to convince the Obama supporters to really look at what is going on, the excess spending, highest deficit ever in our history. It is really frightening to watch the news and hear the reps in Congress talk about even more high-dollar programs, such as the health care debacle, which can only mean higher taxes and more people who can't pay them.
I guess I'll go listen to Glenn Beck for awhile. Maybe I'll feel better after that!

What About the Terrible Economy?

I really hate to be the one to say "I told you so", but I saw this coming several years ago. And now it just makes me want to puke to hear all those big wigs from Washington and Wall Street say they just "never saw this coming". Give me a break. I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but when the banks and builders started putting people in $300K homes when all they could really afford was a $100K home, I could see we were all in big trouble.
And, so now here we are.
What about all of us who were smart enough not to buy the $300K home when all we could afford is a $100K home? Should we have to pay for other peoples' ignorance? I don't think so. This is just one more example of how the government-backed school system has "dumbed-down" the population to the point where they can be talked into signing almost anything!
And then I hear about these "poor people" who have lived in their house for 30 years or so, and when the property values sky-rocketed, they decided to refinance and pull out all that equity. Now they are crying because they owe more on their long-time home than it is really worth, and with the ARM they were talked into, now they can't make the mortgage payment. Poor, poor pitiful you! What did you do with all that money you got?? Go on a nice vacation, or buy a new car or maybe a bunch of other stuff you couldn't afford? Do you think that we who are still living in our $100K house and struggling to make the payment, should bail you out and do whatever it takes to keep you in your house??
Here again, Give me a break!
Well, enough of this. I've got to go try to pull together some money. My mortgage payment is due, and BTW, not delinquent.

What Not to Sell on eBay

1. Items under $10

It sounds like a great idea - after all, everyone likes a bargain don't they? But items that sell for under $10 have one big problem: Shipping. It's quite likely that the shipping for the item will cost more than the item itself and this can be very off-putting to buyers. For example, if the item costs $4.50 and shipping costs $6, the total cost for the item is $10.50. If the buyer can purchase the item at their local store for $8, then this suddenly becomes a much better deal. For small items and accessories, the way to get around this problem is by grouping the items together, such as sets of 6 golf-balls or 5 tea towels.

2. Products everyone else is selling

Many sellers think that the best way to get started on eBay is to sell items that everyone else is selling. Surely those super hot items such as ipods, cell phones, psps and so on will be a quick route to riches? Well, no. The sellers who are already selling these items are not only more established on eBay - and thus familiar to and trusted by buyers - but they will be able to buy wholesale stock in larger bulks lots than you will, so their prices will always be better. Thus it will almost certainly be very difficult for you to make a profit in a market that is already well supplied.

3. Things you love...but no-one else does

Hobbies can be a great way of making money, but only if plenty of other people are interested in them, too.
Another scenario is when you find a product that you think is absolutely wonderful and could be the next best thing...but no-one seems interested in buying it. Oh well you think, it's only short term, eventually they'll learn about my item and start flocking to buy it. Ah, no they won't. It's lonely work trying to educate people on the benefits of a product all on your own. As fabulous as the product might be, it's nigh-on impossible to start a trend on your own. To make money from a trend, you need magazines and newspapers, word of mouth and television to do some of the work for you.

4. Difficult items to ship - e.g. fragile china and plants

Now I'm not saying that these are bad items to sell altogether. Many sellers do very well from these items. But I don't suggest you sell such difficult items when you are first starting out. All these type items have an above-average shipping risk, particularly if not packed properly. As a new seller, any negative feedback you receive at this early stage could be especially damaging to your career.

5. Very large items

Thinking of starting with furniture or pianos? Unless you already have experience selling and shipping these items, then it might be wise to start with something smaller. Shipping such large items is a major operation. Not only that, these items will sell less often than mid-priced items as they won't attract the same number of impulse buyers.

It's been a while since I have had time to post anything, but I'm determined to keep this updated at least once a week, so stick with me here.

The first thing I will advise you to do is go down to your local bank and open a free checking account just for your online activity. Most banks will let you have a free account for around $100 and don't keep more than that in there at any one time. My little local bank here even has online banking so I can move funds easily out of that small account into my main bank account. Almost all "money making" avenues on the internet are going to require you give up your personal information, so just get over it. That's the reason for the seperate bank account.

After you get your bank account set up, use it to get your free Revolution Money Exchange Account. This is a real bank in New York with a real phone number and real people you can talk to. I had to call them when I was setting my account up, and they are very friendly and helpful. Don't be afraid, you can make some real money real fast with this service.

Fiery Ace, Finally Finished!

Hi, friends. Sorry to be so long since my last post, but things have been kinda wild around here. We thought the holiday season would be sorta uneventful, since all we had planned was to eat a dinnner with James' parents and brothers on Christmas day, and stay home away from all the drunk drivers on New Years Eve. That is pretty much our SOP for every holiday season. Why would this year be any different, right?

Well, God had something else in mind for us, and it started on the morning of Dec. 19, at around 7:20 AM. James had been gone on his way to work for about 20 minutes when the phone rang. I didn't recognize the number or name on the caller ID, so when I answered and heard James' panicked voice, I was quite surprised. His words were "Ramona, you've got to come up here. I just totaled my truck!" He told me quickly where he was, and I could here alot of voices and noise in the background.

I jumped up and as I drove the 15 miles to the accident scene, I was trying desperately to prepare myself for whatever was to come. When I approached the area, I could see flashing lights, etc., all you would expect at such a time. I saw the truck down in a 15-20 ft. embankment laying on the passenger side and a huge flatbed wrecker in the process of pulling it upright and out. Then I finally saw James standing on the side of the highway, and what a relief.

As it turns out, he had taken his eyes off the road for a few seconds, the road made a slight curve to the right, and when he looked back, he was off the road on the left, rolled 3/4 and the pictures tell the rest. We are thankful that he was able to push his door open and climb right out. He was really banged up, but overall, he came out "smelling like a rose" considering the area and the depth of his fall.

Unfortunately for us, the only insurance we had on the truck was liability since we have had it paid for for about 3 years. It turned out to be a huge loss, and we spent the next week or so trying to find a truck to replace ours. It seems that the 4x4 Toyota Tacoma Ext. Cab 6 Cyl. Pickup is a pretty hot number. Every one we found for sale was either all ragged out or so expensive we simply couldn't even consider it.

Finally, after much internet searching, we found one at a Toyota dealer in Grapevine, TX which is about 60 miles from where we live. The pictures looked great and the price was reasonable considering what it was. It is a one-owner truck and the guy who traded it in bought a new Tundra 4x4 (upgrade, I guess). We drove a Tundra a few days before at another dealer, but it's just not the same as the Tacoma.

Anyway, the day we were there buying it, there were about 3 other people who had seen it on the internet and were trying to buy it also, as far away as San Antonio and Tulsa, Ok. We were fortunate to get there when we did. The truck is almost identical to the wrecked one, just 3 years newer and a few upgrades. It's even the same color exterior, different interior. I'll post some pictures in a few days.

James likes it fine, he just didn't want to take on a car payment right now, but you've got to do what you've got to do, right?

Had That Molar Pulled, Beautiful Fall Photos

Well, it's been 5 days since the tooth extraction, and I am starting to believe that I'm going to be okay. I have taken alot of pain meds, but now am down to only one a day, and my jaw has just a slight ache now. I still have at least one more tooth to be pulled and hopefully I will be okay for awhile. This whole dentist thing is really wearing me out.

I took more pictures of some of the beautiful fall trees and flowers. Hope you enjoy them.

Other Half Finally Speaks

Hi, all, this is James. I'm approaching 40, younger than my wife, working alot, with little time to visit. They say opposites attract, so as far as I'm concerned, you will always know who you are talking to, which is exactly opposite of "what she said".

Here we go. In my younger days I enjoyed concerts, cash, and cuties. (uninhibited free spirit) Today, things are much different. Because of Ramona, I am more grounded, focused on the goal, and prepared, more times than not, for whatever comes my way.

Evenings these days are spent at home after a hard day's work, leaving me to my own devices, computer, drums, guitar, rock & roll memorabilia collection, etc. What I am interested in is music, and those who create, play or produce it, primarily KISS. My comments in this blog will, in many cases, focus on that subject matter alone.

So let's get started talking about KISS. Just to let you know, I'm not obsessed or anything, with KISS. However, I did grow up listening to them from age 6 or so, with my older siblings and their friends. My parents would buy me and my first older brother every new KISS album, mags, models, puzzles, you get the idea. They were the only band we knew existed for the better part of about 5 years, '75-'80. Then I discovered other bands and records I was interested in collecting. Our walls were completely plastered with the posters, pictures, and inserts, all KISS. It is amazing how far-reaching this band, KISS, and their influence has become around the world. KISS is truly one of the original super groups of our generation.

I have heard my whole life old people saying how great having grandchildren is, but until I had some of my own, I never really knew how true it is. In my last post, I was talking about my trip to the dentist, and I finally went yesterday to have one of my molars pulled. Ouch! I was feeling pretty bad this morning, when out of the blue, I got a phone call from those precious granddaughters, Erin and Britt. It just so happens, they had a day off from school for a teacher workday, so they called Grandma. It sure makes me feel better just to get to talk to them. Their dad, (my oldest child) is in the Army, currently in Baghdad for the second time. They live in Georgia and we in Texas, so we only get to see them once a year, during their annual summer vacation to Texas. I sure miss them and would love to be close enough to see them every day, but that is not possible. If you have grandchildren that live near you, be very thankful, you are truly blessed.
I've got to go rest now, my jaw is starting to ache. I want to remind you to check out our online store for all your holiday shopping. You will surely find the perfect gift for that person on your list who is impossible.

To the Dentist

I've been having alot of pain in my gums and jaws for over a year now since I had my very first ever molar pulled about 18 months ago. It was a very brutal event, and my gums and jaw in that area are not healed completely yet. Enough of that, though. I finally broke down and went back to the dentist yesterday, (not the one who performed the brutality), and as it turns out, I clench and grind my teeth while I sleep, and this has caused tremendous damage to all my molars. I have old fillings in most of these teeth that are very large, and apparently as I clench or grind during the night, these fillings act as wedges and have literally split my teeth. I am almost in shock at how much damage has been done. I am for sure going to be forced to have the very back teeth on both lowers pulled, and possibly more. I addition to that, he (the dentist) wants me to have some kind of mouthpiece made to keep me from grinding and it costs $500.00. I think I'll go to WM and get one of those sports mouthpieces that form fit for only $1.98.
I am telling this story to warn anyone who thinks they may grind or clench during the night, don't let it go unchecked. If I had done something about this years ago, I wouldn't be losing all these teeth now. It's really very sad. I'll just be glad to finally get something done to stop all this pain. Maybe I'll be a little bit easier to get along with. No, wait, I'm still old, right?

Google Checkout OK!!

Well, I'm glad to say that I finally got the Google Checkout feature on my store all fixed-up. I had some problems communicating with the folks at Google, but in the end it came down to "typing or copy & paste". Let me say that "copy & paste" works every time!
Now my customers can buy securely with a credit or debit card using either Google Checkout or Paypal. I do still accept mailed money orders, as well, but that takes longer.
I've been real busy adding new inventory to our store, and since James is working full-time now, he hasn't had a chance to write anything here in the blog. I'm hoping that he will soon, because he knows alot of very interesting facts about KISS, the band, that I know all you KISS fans would love to hear. He has done well helping me with some of the descriptions of the magazines and other items we have in our store, and I'm thankful for that. I need all that help I can get!

Problems with Google Checkout

I have to admit I'm not as computer literate as I would like to be, and I am trying my best to learn something new each day. With that being said, I am almost to my wits end with trying to talk to anyone at Google regarding the issue I am having with the checkout function on my web store. BTW, if anyone wants to purchase an item from my store using a credit or debit card, you can still do that with Paypal. Please don't let the Google Checkout system not working deter you from purchasing from my store. Paypal is just as secure, and is alot more user friendly as far as I'm concerned. Google is trying its best to have its fingers in everyones pie, and they are leaving customer service in the wake.
I have alot of new items in the store, so come on over and have a look. You just may find something you can't live without.

Another Day

Hi, all. I don't have alot of time, so I'll just say a few words. I was going through some old cards and papers yesterday afternoon, and I came across a birthday card that my dear Grandmother had sent me in 1988. It was just a few months after we had moved away from my childhood home in Deer Park, TX., to relocate to North Texas for my then husband's job. It was very sad to reread how much my grandmother missed me and my kids, who were teenagers at the time. We had always lived within a few miles of her and we saw each other almost every day. It brings tears to my eyes to remember how much love we all shared, and how far apart families grow these day.
Anyway, inside that lovely card was another paper that my grandmother had obtained, and she sent it along to me for encouragement all those years ago. It still holds words of encouragment for all of us today. I'll share some now and some in future days.
These words were said to have been spoken in a prayer by an old Southern pastor years ago. We should sure all live by them today.

This blog will be maintained by two people, so you never know which one of us you may hear from as days go by. First, we are just two Texans who found each other about 16 years ago quite by accident, and we've been together ever since. I am Ramona, and am older than the other half of the team, James, and I guess love has kept us together all these years. We have both worked hard, but neither of us likes to be called an "employee", so, as far as jobs go, we don't have them. It just seems like God has always provided a way for us to continue to maintain our lifestyle, even though at times it hasn't been easy. Enough of that.
